75 Years Geneva Conventions

There are currently over 120 armed conflicts in the world, with millions of civilians suffering the humanitarian consequences of them. The most important set of rules in international humanitarian law (IHL), the Geneva Conventions from 1949, seek to limit the effects of armed conflict by regulating the conduct of hostilities and protecting the victims of armed conflict. Despite the vital global relevance of the Geneva Conventions, they face significant challenges in today's world. Conflicts have become more complex, weapons more sophisticated and combatants even more diverse.

At this year’s Humanitarian Enrichment Forum by the Circle of Young Humanitarians, you’ll experience a glimpse of life in war through Waad al-Kateab’s courageous and powerful documentary FOR SAMA. Trigger warning: The movie contains scenes of violence, blood, and dead bodies.

With expert input from Dr. Anne Quintin, Head of the Advisory Service of IHL at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and Dr. Hamza al-Kateab, co-founder of the Action For Sama Foundation, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the challenges and hopes for IHL in today’s world.

Remember and share: Even wars have rules!

About FOR SAMA

FOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.

Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
