«Safeguarding the Rights of Refugees: A Role for the New Generation»

Who: UNHCR
Workshop Leader: Mathilde Tiberghien (Senior Protection Officer) & Daphne Karaman (Protection Associate)

Description: 108.4 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced. Refugees fleeing war or persecution can be very vulnerable, no matter where they are: in their own country, on their journey to safety and also once they have arrived in a country of asylum. Many have been forced to flee with little more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind their homes, possessions, jobs and loved ones. They may have suffered human rights violations or seen family members or friends killed or attacked.

In this workshop, we will talk about the legal and physical protection issues faced by refugees, and what UNHCR is doing about it. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, works in more than 500 locations to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, or war at home. During the workshop, we will also discuss what young people like YOU can do to support people forced to flee worldwide, and in particular those living in Switzerland, just next to YOU.
